Roof Replacement Day: What Happens From Start to Finish

TLDR: Most roof replacements are finished in one day. The crew protects your yard, tears off the old roof, checks the decking, installs the new roof, and cleans up. You do not need to be home. Move your cars, bring pets inside, and expect noise.

A new roof is a big job that happens fast. Knowing the order of the day makes it a lot less stressful. Here is what a roof replacement with Live Oak Roofing looks like.

Before the crew arrives

We usually start within 3 days to a week of signing, depending on weather and material delivery. The day before, move your cars out of the driveway and garage, since the driveway is used for materials and debris. Take down anything fragile hanging on your walls, because tear off sends vibration through the house. Bring patio furniture, grills, and potted plants away from the house if you can.

Step 1: Protecting your property

Before any shingles come off, we tarp the landscaping around the house and cover the AC unit. The tarps catch the old roofing and nails so they stay out of your beds and lawn.

Step 2: Tear off

The old shingles and underlayment come off down to the wood decking. This is the loudest part of the day. If you work from home or have a baby napping, plan to be somewhere else for the morning.

Step 3: Decking check

With the old roof gone, we can finally see all of the decking. Soft or rotted sheets get replaced. We replace up to 3 sheets of rotted decking at no charge, and if we find more than that, we show you before going further. More on rotted decking.

Step 4: The new roof goes on

New underlayment, drip edge, and flashing go down first, then the shingles, then the hip and ridge cap. Pipe flashings are replaced, not reused.

Step 5: Cleanup and walkthrough

We haul off all of the debris and run a magnetic sweep over the yard and driveway to pick up nails. Then your project manager walks the job with you.

Do I need to be home?

No. We only need access to the outside of the house and the driveway. Many customers leave for work and come home to a finished roof.

What about pets and kids?

Keep pets inside or with a friend for the day. The noise bothers some animals, and gates may be open while the crew works. Keep kids out of the yard until the cleanup is finished.
